Airline tragedy yields oceanic discoveries

No one talks much about the mysterious disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight 370. It was the hot news topic back in the spring, but it’s faded from headlines after initial searches seemed only to highlight ocean trash.

Nonetheless, the search continues — and with it some amazing discoveries about our vast oceans. A CNN.com report this week on the ongoing search said a vessel using leading-edge technology has found “extinct volcanoes, immense ridges and cavernous trenches” on the seabed. And get this: It’s all in a relatively small slice of the ocean — an area roughly the size of West Virginia.

Sadly for the loved ones of the doomed flight’s victims, no discoveries or peace of mind. For the rest of us, though, the search and frustration again shows how little we know about our oceans — which covers more than 70 percent of our planet. We know a lot more about deep space, millions of light years away, than we do our own ocean depths.
